It all sounds not great for mental health. I had a big 5 publisher once, an agent, but now I just write exactly what I like, have had books with indie publishers and I’m so much happier. But weird and queer was always my niche I talk about it here - https://youtu.be/dWgvnry8qEY?is=9nvUV_gbFLm_RZhU

Exactly. I hear this across different genres, and people wonder if it is this or that genre. It's a general problem. It's why several people who once would say never ever are putting books out themselves - reach is much more limited unless you invest heavily in the narrow range of marketing that shifts numbers. But you get that connection with readers. Understandable reasons not to, of course - it's not really my mindset either.
